This Week in the Cafe: July 18 – 25

Connections made at the Venture Cafe are all part of our effort to enhance community engagement in the Kendall Square neighborhood. To that end, the Venture Cafe is hosting the Center for Future Civic Media, an MIT institute established with the end of  ”creat[ing] technical and social systems to help communities organize, prioritize, share, and act on information” (C4FCM). We are really excited to host this group of forward-thinking citizens, (including Venture Cafe team member, Dharmishta Rood, who is a fellow at C4FCM) seeking to progress our society’s ability to participate in their communities using twenty-first century platforms. While we are playing host to the group’s biweekly meeting, usually held at the Media Lab, the organizers gladly welcome cafe visitors to sit in on the meeting and interact with members. The meeting will start close to 3pm in the conference room adjacent to the cafe and run until approximately 5pm.

Also joining us are Bob Buderi and Greg Huang, editors at Xconomy, a web-based news outlet for all things business and technology in the Boston area.  Xconomy’s mission is to bring  a source for news, jobs, blogs and events to cater to the tech-hungry entrepreneurs and developers, specifically in Boston. Hopeful start-up developers may find their lists of particular interest — a great resource to help with everything from VC funding to co-working space. Stop in to chat with Bob or Greg between 4 and 6pm.

As you all know, thanks to our mention in the New York Times,  Bain Capital Ventures will begin holding office hours in the Cafe on Fridays. Before that starts, however, Bain will be showcasing the site for their new Innovation Center this Thursday. Come see this new virtual center while drinking a real beer and hearing about how Bain hopes to “foster the [innovation] ecosystem.” Deepak Sindwani will be in the cafe from 4-6pm.

To cap off a packed Thursday, FluidicMEMS will be holding their semi-monthly gathering in the cafe.  Lily Kim, Joost Bonsen, and John Mills will be hosting a discussion about the ways in which we can expect microfluidic technology to impact healthcare and research.  Microfluidics, according to the FluidicMEMS website is “emerging technology that enables precise, automated manipulation of tiny volumes of fluid (often nanoliters or even picoliters).” Interested? Stop by from 5-8pm to discuss microfluidics with researchers and practitioners.

As always, you can see the full line-up of events on the Venture Cafe calendar, plus follow us on Twitter @VentureCafe for last minute updates.

Also, in the cafe this week we expect to have Brooklyn Lager, Kona Wailua Wheat, Cisco Indie Pale Ale and Harpoon IPA on draft… yes, that is 4 beers! (Expect a new beer post from Amy next week – she’s on vacation this week!)

See you Thursday!
